Learning to Love you More

February 2, 2012

This morning when I woke, I picked up a random book from a pile and read these words by Ram Dass

“Treat everyone you meet like god in drag”

Now, I love drag queens. Plus, this teaching aligns with the Anusara tradition that founds itself on looking for the good in everyone.

I went to get my coffee from my local unfriendly barista. I usually write him off as a big dick but this time I silently repeated the mantra ‘everyone is god in drag’.

I observed the form of my coffee guy. ‘So you’re really god in drag asking me if I want a coffee. No wonder you make such good coffee. Jeez you’re huge in the upper region. I could see how you might be vessel-ifying something big. Very big.’

Even though he seemed impatient and not very smiley, I began to appreciate him in a new way. I was extra nice to him. In fact I was very pleased to be served by him.

I tried it again later that night while having dinner with my boyfriend F. As he was speaking I looked into his eyes and  for a second I saw a glimmer of amazing divinity. I felt love. I felt so honoured to be in his life. You are  actually g.o.d in drag, I thought. I’m lucky.

I looked around….apparently spirit has a blonde hair, a big butt, skinny legs, buck teeth, makes amazing pizza and music and came up with yoga…and also spits in public, swears loudly in trams and sends me bills.

Let’s just say spirit isn’t choosey.

So that person-version of the supreme was a complete ass? But hey, look what came of it. You grew, you got closer to someone, you connected to what’s important, you figured out who you can count on. Lots of good things happened.

Challenge is an energy in life and it’s got to be there. If it wasn’t for the sleepwalkers burning oil, polluting and steeling then humanity would not be contemplating our own evolution towards something better. Our own awakening is becoming more urgent because of previous unconscious generations and current ones. Perhaps something beautiful will emerge from this calamity. To be clear it would be far better if they would wake up.

I’m picking a new acronym for g.o.d
Good Or Dangerous.

Anyone who comes into your path is Good Or Dangerous but either or, they are consciousness in body put in your path to soothe you or change you.

Next time you’re in an argument look a bit closer. Next time you’re buying groceries who’s really serving you? Adopt the attitude that everyone is spirit in body and you might just become speechless in awe, tripped out and plain weird or interested in finding out more about the soul in front of you that ordinarily you might not say hello to.

Today I learnt to love you more and that feels good.
